Yesterday a good friend had us over for a dinner filled with fresh picks from his own garden.  Juicy zebra tomatoes and basil, mixed lettuce in the salads, rainbow carrots and sweet beets filled our plates.  What a delicious way to enjoy the Colorado Summer!  If you would like a taste of some of Colorado’s local produce and want to pick it yourself then here are some of the farms and orchards nearby:

Berry Patch Farms Organic in Brighton, CO. Pick your own red Raspberries, strawberries, basil, carrots and flowers.  There is also a fresh produce stans full of other fruits and veggies.  August is peach season, Western Slope Peaches (Freestone).

May Farms In Byers, CO.  Does not allow pick your own but they do have a fresh farmers market and garden with fruits and veggies that are picked daily.  Weekends in October are a festive time with hay rides, a barrel train, the corn maze & pumpkin patch.  The pumpkins are on vine and you can pick those.

Ya Ya Farm & Orchard (organic) Longmont, CO.  U-pick-it Apple Orchard in Boulder County with macintosh, cortland, Macoun, Jonathon, Crispin, Wold River, Ginger Gold, Red Delish and Liberty varieties.  September is Colorado apple season and Ya Ya requires advance reservations for picking. Ya Ya also offers nighttime hay rides and camp fire for groups, advance reservations required.

Delicious Orchards (organic) Hotchkiss, CO. U-pick fruits: Cherries, peaches, apples, apricots, pears and nectarines.  Have you heard of Big B’s Fabulous juices?  Well, this is the place it is pressed, in the North Fork Valley.

Colorado offers a large selection of other u-pick farms & orchards that require a bit of a drive outside of Denver but what a great excuse to get out and see more of Colorado.  Many of these farms and orchards are open everyday but some are only open on the weekends so be sure and call ahead before you go.   Happy picking!

NewWestFest in Fort Collins

Head up to Fort Collins this weekend to help the town celebrate it’s birthday at the NewWestFest, August 20-22. It’ll be a fun weekend with tons of great music! And it’s all FREE!  There will be more than 70 different bands playing throughout the weekend starting at 6:00pm on Friday in historic, downtown Fort Collins. The Flobotswill be playing Friday night and an oldie, but goodie Earth, Wind and Fire will be playing on Saturday night. It’s sure to be a great weekend for the whole family! This is the 22nd annual NewWestFest and they will feature a ton of local musicians…one of my favorite local bands is Angie Stevens and The Beautiful Wreck who will be playing on Sunday afternoon. She has an amazing voice and the band is a lot of fun so definitely plan on sticking around on Sunday.

In addition to the 6 music stages, there will be plenty of other activities. This is a community birthday celebration for the city of Fort Collins and there will be more than 300 tents set up offering art and photography booths, jewelry, arts and crafts vendors from around the country and plenty of food including Thai, Greek, BBQ and Indian cuisine. There will be beer and wine tents and, of course, it wouldn’t be a festival without funnel cakes. For those of you with children, there will be plenty of activities for them to participate in at Library Park and the Fort Collins Museum. When the temperature setting is in "low," the smoker's hose/valve/regulator (HVR) assembly does not allow sufficient gas to flow, causing the flame to extinguish. Gas continues to flow and build up inside the smoker. If the smoker is reignited the build-up of propane gas can cause an explosion that bursts the smoker's door open, posing an injury hazard.

The C-shaped metal stand can break where the curved arm attaches to the leg of the metal frame, posing a fall hazard to an infant in the hammock.

The side-to-side shifting or tilting of the hammock can cause the infant to roll and become entrapped or wedged against the hammock's fabric and/or mattress pad, resulting in a suffocation hazard.

The bottle warmers can overheat liquids and baby food, posing a burn hazard to adults and babies.

Last Monday marked the official opening of the Mordecai Children’s Garden at Denver Botanic Gardens on York St.  This urban oasis for kids is a rooftop garden for touching, smelling, seeing and tasting the outdoor environment.  Vistors are invited to build forts, eat fresh tomatoes, play in the stream and make arts & crafts.  The garden is ever-changing and you should expect a different experience with each trip.  Here are a few shots I took this quiet afternoon.

The garden is 3-acre rooftop garden on top of the parking structure at 10th & York St.  open daily from 9-5 PM.  The kiddo’s garden is included in the price of the regular admission.  Members are free.

Savory Spice Shop

If you like to cook or just like to eat, you’ll absolutely love the Savory Spice Shop located on Platte Street in downtown Denver.  It’s a quaint little shop that offers sugar and spice and everything nice…there are so many amazing spices, seasonings, extracts, seasonings and more. My hubby and I first tried the Alderwood Smoked Salt on some edamame while having dinner at a friends house and it was so tasty and unusual, we’ve been hooked on the stuff ever since. It’s amazing the difference a unique salt can have a dish. One of the best things about the shop is that you can buy the spices in very small amounts so you don’t have to commit to buying a whole bottle of Blue Cheese Powder, cardamom or saffron if think you’ll only want to use it once.

If you’re a fan of the Food Network you may have heard of the Savory Spice Shop and it’s now famous owners, Janet and Mike Johnston. Apparently it all started when the show ”Road Tasted with the Neely’s” came to Denver and stopped by the store. The producers of that show also produce “Paula’s Best Dishes” and Janet and Mike were asked if they’d be interested in appearing in a future episode. So now Paula Dean is also a fan of the Savory Spice Shop! The Food Network ended up filming some episodes of a new show, “Spice and Easy”, that was hosted by Janet and featured recipes they came up with at the store and at home. Six shows were filmed and aired in April, 2010. We can’t get enough of summer events presented by local Denver businesses and we’re happy to say it’s the first ever of it’s kind in the Governors Park area.  Lala’s Wine Bar + Pizzeria presents Movie Under the Moon in Governors Park.  Wednesday, August, 25th the park will be open 6-11:30PM for the free outdoor movie. Lala’s has a great setup planned for Movie Under the Moon with hot food which includes boxed dinners, pizza by the slice and cheese samplers.  A beer garden will be serving up Peroni and Lunetta Prosecco. The featured movie is Bottle Shock and it begins at dusk.  After the movie there’s an extended happy hour over at Lala’s.

Complimentary popcorn and cotton candy will be served up for the moviegoers.  Proceeds will benefit Casting for a Cure – - a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for Rett Syndrome.
